You’ve found a community beyond belief! In conversations about religion, it’s common to ask, “What do you believe?” It’s a leading question. It assumes the only important or interesting thing is what a faith “believes.”
We are not a church of beliefs. We are a church beyond belief.
Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church is a community of covenant. Covenant being an old churchy word for something like aspirations for how to be together. This is a community of promises and aspires to live deeply, authentically, and wholly; connected to one another, to society, and to the spirit we all share beyond the many paths we follow… Earth-based, Jewish, Atheist, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Zoroastrian. The only belief system we try to avoid is the otherwise always popular, “Judgmentalism.”
Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church’s covenant below was established within the past decade to help us understand what it means to be together making the world a better place one action, one moment, one relationship, one soul at a time. It articulates the ways we aspire to be in a community that celebrates diversity. The full text can be found here:
If you’re looking for a church full of people who believe exactly what you believe, then this will likely be an uncomfortable place for you. If you’re looking instead for a community that honors what you truly believe and encourages you to live your beliefs authentically and without judgment of other’s beliefs, then you may have finally found what you’re looking for!
