UU Minister Rev. Mark Kiyimba shared the struggle for Ugandan women and BGLQT rights.
Shortly after being honored for his human rights work for Ugandan BGLQT citizens, Rev. Mark Kiyimba shared the struggle for equal rights for women and BGLQT citizens with Allegheny and called for support of our UU members in Uganda.
Kiyimba is founder of the Unitarian Universalist congregation in Kampala, Uganda, the New Life Children’s Home, a place for children who have lost parents to AIDS or who are themselves HIV positive, and the New Life Primary School, located in the Kkindu village west of Masaka, Uganda.
In July 2012 he was awarded the Virginia Uribe Award for Creative Leadership in Human Rights by the National Education Association. The award is presented to an individual whose activities in human rights significantly impact education and the achievement of equal opportunity for those facing discrimination. The award was presented to Rev. Kiyimba at the 2012 Human and Civil Rights Awards Dinner on July 1, 2012 in the Grand Ballroom of the Convention Center, Washington, DC.
Virginia Uribe was a high school teacher and counselor and a leader in the movement to improve the lives of gay and lesbian youth. In 1984, she founded California’s Project 10, the first school-based dropout prevention program for students facing sexual orientation discrimination and harassment.
